Zone of Proximal Development is a term coined by Lev Vygotsky, a Soviet psychologist, in the late 1920s. It is used to characterize an individual's mental development. ZPD "defines those functions that have not yet matured but are in the process of maturation, functions that will mature tomorrow but are currently in an embryonic state." Vygotsky viewed this concept as a better way to explain the relationship between children's learning and cognitive development.
